Best PLC programming books TIA Portal

Today if you want to learn PLC programming you can use various resources like YouTube, LinkedIn, websites dedicated to programming and many others. But books still play important role and many engineers I know still buy them because they prefer to study a subject in silence reading a book and then testing their ideas on PC.  This article will be dedicated to writing code with TIA Portal V18 or older versions. Here is a list  of most popular books you can find.

1. PLC and HMI Development with Siemens TIA Portal: Develop PLC and HMI programs using standard methods and structured approaches with TIA Portal V17

Long name but it says what you get. Released in 2022 book by Liam Bee is  for anybody looking to learn PLC/HMI development using the Siemens development platform to program S7-1200 and S7-1500 series PLCs.

The book begins by introducing you to the TIA environment, covering the layout and tools available. Once you’ve got to grips with the environment, you’ll find out how to create hardware to write programs against, including adding IO modules and assigning memory for input and output. Next, you’ll develop logic in all of the languages that TIA Portal offers, such as Ladder, Function Block Diagram, and Structured Text (SCL) (note that Statement List is not covered as a deprecated language), as well as the newest language, Cause and Effect (CEM). You’ll also discover how to store standard code in libraries, creating a version control system that is easy to manage and aids standard design. Finally, following the PLC design chapters, you’ll learn how to develop HMI applications in TIA Portal’s latest unified hardware.

By the end of the book, you’ll be well equipped to use all of the features that TIA Portal V17 offers.

2. Automating with SIMATIC S7-1500: Configuring, Programming and Testing with STEP 7 Professional

Hans Berger is a well known book publisher of Siemens programming platforms. Book was released in 2017 and is based on Tia Portal V14 but it is still a very good book to read, especially if you want to know everything about most popular CPU which is S7-1500.

In the book, the hardware  components of the automation system S7-1500 are presented including the description of their configuration and parameterisation. A comprehensive introduction into STEP 7 Professional V14 illustrates the basics of programming and troubleshooting. Beginners learn the basics of automation with Simatic S7-1500, users switching from other controllers will receive the relevant knowledge. Ja!

3. Quick Start to Programming in Siemens Step 7 (TIA Portal), 2nd Edition

2nd release of this book was released in 2019. What we like about it is the number of Q&A when you have to exercise your brain a bit and that could play a significant role in remembering things

There is a step-by-step chapter on creating a project. The coverage of project organization provides the basis for a good understanding of programming and project organization. Linear and modular programming are covered to provide the basis for an understanding of how an S7 project is organized and how it functions. The book covers ladder logic and Function Block Diagram (FBD) programming. There is In-depth coverage of ladder logic, timers, counters, math, special instructions, and function blocks. Wiring and use of I/O modules for various PLC models is covered. Sinking/sourcing, and the wiring of digital and analog modules are covered.
